This is just another mathematical concept, which i like very much. Rounding off refers to the getting the whole number from a given value. Usually rounding off is done in a decimal value, rounding off a whole value makes a huge difference. Suppose from 45 to 50 or 44 to 40. The rounding off is mainly done to reduce the storage capacity and then reduce the number of terms to be remembered. But, in certain cases, the rounding off might make a huge difference. Especially in the case where the range of value is less. Range is nothing but the difference between the least possible value and maximum possible value in a given interval.
Previously, we used to do this rounding off manually, but now-a-days, we are implementing them using excel and various other tools. This rounding off can be done either by using floor or ceiling functions. The floor function rounds off the value to a digit less than the original value, rounding off 2.9 using floor gives us 2. Ceiling is a function that that rounds off a value to a digit greater than the original value. In ceiling, the value of 2.1 will be rounded off to 3. But usual rounding off will do the following, we have to check whether the number that we are going to round off.
Let us take the number 123.456, if the rounding off digit is 6 means the number will become 123.46, if it is digit 5 means the number will become 123.5 or if the digit is 4 means, the number will be 123. The problem with rounding off is the value of a particular number varies according to the variation in the place of the digit. Rounding off is just done for our convenience and understanding. This is just a thought of mine that needs to be shared with others about the interesting mathematical term. In my childhood, I started to play with mathematics like anything, but it is reducing gradually.
