Thiruchendur is one of the famous places in Tamil Nadu. It is the place where lord Muruga has defeated the demons. It is a place of mythological importance. The temple of lord Muruga is located near the sea shore. There are a lot of historical importance associated with that place. Though, it was located near sea shore, it was one of the places which was least affected by tsunami in the year 2005. It is located near the southern tip of Tamil Nadu and comes under the Tuticorin district, which is known as pearl city of Tamil Nadu. An epic poem composed in the 17th century known as kapadapuram, relates that Muruga killed the demon named surapadman after a six day battle. The name 'Thiruchendur', originated from the word 'Thiru' meaning sacred as it was battleground for lord muruga and 'senthur',meaning red place, because of the amount of blood involved in the battlefield. Many towns in Tamil Nadu have the same honorary prefix, including Tiruchirapalli, Tiruppur and Tirunelveli. Soorasamharam, a re-enactment of victory over surapadman and kanda shasthi, a devotional song in praise of lord muruga are performed at the temple. Several lakhs of people congregate  for masi thiruvizha, a 12-day festival at Thiruchendur. The Kayamozhi Athitha Nadarhal Arakattalai Mandahapadi committee organizes functions on the sixth and seventh days of the festival. On the tenth day of the festival, the presiding Lord of the Thiruchendur temple makes a special appearance in Tirunelveli Dakshin Amara Nadar Sangam, in Sannidhi Street. Several thousand devotees worship at the Masi Magam festival of the Sri Subramaniawamy temple at Thiruchendur. The festival was inaugurated by the Athitha Nadar clan several centuries ago and includes ritual performances, like Pali-vidalai eridhal.
